Creating a Narrative in the Here and Now

Creating a Narrative in the ‘Here & Now’

This course covers the ‘what’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ in creating a great a narrative that captures the attention and imagination of the reader. Topics to be covered include:

The Absolute Present Tense
As in life, everything in the screenplay happens in the here and now. The Absolute Present Tense (APT) forces the reader/viewer to participate in the story. In a way they are creating it by the mere act of reading it. APT is quite possibly the most powerful and visceral narrative tool you have in capturing the attention of your reader/viewer.

Narrative Pacing
Narrative pacing controls the speed and rhythm at which an action, scene and overall story unfolds. If done effectively, it can hook your reader/viewer into not just reading, but viscerally experiencing the action and events of your story while keeping them on the edge of their seat.

Atmosphere
Next to the story itself, atmosphere is arguably the primary means of capturing the imagination of the reader-viewer. The plot can be tension filled, the characters engaging, but it’s the atmosphere that captures the emotions and imagination of the reader and stays with them long after they have turned the last page.

Succinctness
I have often said that the art of screenwriting is in the ability to tell the story in a succinct, near haiku style. The writer must learn how to avoid detailed action without forsaking the dramatic purpose of the scene. This means finding the shortest most effective way to express the visual experience of your story without stripping it of its dramatic impact.

Descriptors
Learning how to effectively use descriptors can be a tremendous value to the screenwriter.  With a single, carefully chosen word or phrase, the writer can illuminate an image, viscerally express an action, reveal the inner workings of a character, and invoke a palpable atmosphere to the story.
